Every time I turn around and look at a variety of polls regarding the Health Care mess, I see roughly the same result. The Citizens of the United States do NOT want the current bill (or is it bills today?) and they want the whole thing thrown in the trash.

Do you agree?

I would be interested in seeing some discussion here as this is a touchy topic and there are many different views.

But, here is what I think.
1 – get rid of the 2,000 plus pages of junk
2 – make changes, ONE at a time without adding anything in – earmarks
3 – drop the barriers for cross border insurance sales
4 – stop the stupid drug advertisements that try to sell you a drug that will “stop the itch” but kill you. Drugs should be the doctor’s choice.
5 – put a reasonable cap on law suit awards
6 – don’t touch Medicare or Medicaid

It seems to me that none of that will cost anyone anything but should reduce rates by a good margin.

And that’s my view

Hi, I disagree with almost all of your points, but sure do like your website. I retired over three years ago after 37 years with the VA. I was the immediate past Director/CEO of the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Healthcare System. I am not a veteran. Since retiring I have spent my time writing and being a radio commentator. Check out my show on webtalkradio.net Its called Adventures in Healthcare. Send me an email at FLMalphurs@gmail.com if you would like to appear on the show, by telephone. My first book, My Life in the VA: Lessons in Leadership offers a few of my ideas on improving the VA and government. Since based on my daily observations and reading in healthcare, I have no doubt that we are heading for a collapse in healthcare, maybe as bad as the Wall Street debacle. Why? Layoffs from hospitals, unhappy docs, rising uninsured, costs going higher every day because fewer people can afford health insurance. And, the illogical. Hospitals bills for $65,000, ins that pays $32,000, the patient pays $2,000 and so who pays the rest? We do. Or the few cash or credit customers. VA keeps hip replacements in the hospital for up to 14 days. Medicare pays for seven days and then requires the patient to go to a nursing home. Who does better? The vets with everything adjusted for age, income etc. The VA is about 30% cheaper than the rest of healthcare and part of the reason is its formuluary for drugs. Yes, doctors should prescribe what they think is best, but it should start with the drugs on the formulary because physicians, pharmacists and scientists have studied the matter exhaustively, then if that drug doesn’t work and sometimes it doesn’t, another drug is used. WE have the highest cost of health care in the world and most of us are deeply disatisfied with our healthcare, not mine pesonally, I have that Congressional Plan which really is for Federal employees, but the horror stories are beinging to mount and I am afraid that our health care is already on that slippery slope. Health care reform, any of the bills, is a step in the right direction, but we’ll have to revisit it in the coming Congresses. Sorry, I’ll get off the soapbox, send me an email if you want to talk about it. Thanks.

    Fred,
It is refreshing to know that I am not the only person that is so interested in this issue that we write a book. Don’t Stop. I have meetings to attend but will respond a bit down the road. I wanted you to know I read your post.
    Thanks.

  • Cruiseman says:

    Fred,
    I am finally getting back.
It seems there are a few reasons why people believe our healthcare is going down hill. Mostly costs for care and costs for insurance and costs for medicine.
Why not address these issues one step at a time?

1 – Cross state lines with insurance coverage. It seemed to work fairly well for auto insurance. It would cost the Federal Government nothing and would increase competition which should reduce rates.

2 – Cap amounts for certain malpractice cases. This will reduce the insurance rates for doctors and should trickle down to the patients.

3 – Medicare and Medicaid payments to doctors are below the going rates. Maybe that should be reduced in addition to the amount of paperwork the doctors must do to get paid.

4 – Go after Medicare and Medicaid fraud which I have been hearing is in the billions each year. Sounds like a reduction there also.

The only thing, of these four, that should increase Federal Spending would be #4 and when they eliminate the fraud should pay for itself with money left over.

Being on Social Security now, I get angry that the Congress has, for years, taken from that program to do others. Now that’s wrong! Maybe the biggest expenditure should be repaying the Social Security system.
